Describe the responsibilities of your role.
Our team consists of two supervisors and 16 technicians, and it’s our responsibility to fix everyone’s problems and make them happy. We’ve got the best job ever! Our team handles everything from construction to tenant improvements, maintenance and repairs. We make sure that our facilities are safe and everything is working well. I’m lucky enough to also conduct some property inspections because of my background in property management. We try to handle any problem our customers have. If we’re not able to provide the solution, we’ll help find someone who can.
Describe the path you took to arrive in your current role.
Thirty years ago I began my career in property management. I eventually got out of that business when I had small children and didn’t want to take calls in the middle of the night. I worked in the prison system for six years and after that I worked with Indiana Medicaid which gave me experience with hospitals, doing their contracting and enrollments. Seven years ago when Medxcel was getting started, I got a phone call asking me if I’d be interested in learning about a very unique opportunity. I met with Eric Waller, who was an Area Vice President with Medxcel at the time, and I was enamored with the company’s culture, Eric’s personality, and the fact that the opportunity was something totally new with a new up and coming company. He told me the job description hadn’t been written yet and he couldn’t tell me exactly what properties I’d be managing, but I took a leap of faith and said sign me up. Eric told me it would be crazy, that I’d learn a ton, that I’d make great friends and so much more. And that’s been exactly my experience; it’s been a great journey so far.
What is the best part of your job?
I love that every day is a different adventure. There are days my alarm clock goes off at 4:45am and I think to myself, it’s going to be an easy day, and before I get into my office at 6:30, I’ve already resolved ten different problems and have twenty more waiting for me. No two days are ever the same and I love that. This job is a perfect match for my personality.
Which of Medxcel’s Core Values speaks the most to you?
Our Core Value of Service of the Poor is so important to me. The fact that we give back so much to charities and our local communities is very special. I oversee a group here in Indiana that sets up opportunities to serve at least twice a year. Last fall we helped with a local not-for-profit organization where women who are serving out the last part of their sentence can move to a home where they can have their children with them as they prepare to be released. Our team assisted them with landscaping, fire safety and facilities work. We changed out 200 lights to make the place brighter and fixed the playground for the children. We also helped out with another organization at our children’s hospital, making gift bags for Valentine’s Day for over 300 children. We partnered with another organization to conduct a drive for children who are being removed from their homes and being put into the foster care system. We put together 20 backpacks we call “swag bags” and filled them with all the necessities the children need when they are being moved. We also put together 12 large baskets for the foster families taking the children in, filled with cleaning supplies and food, things that you and I might not think of them needing but when you’re suddenly adding additional children to your home you may not have enough of those supplies. I’m blessed that this type of service is part of my job and that I get to work alongside our teams serving in our community.
What is the most unusual thing you’ve experienced with Medxcel?
Boy I’ve seen it all for sure! Recently we responded to a clogged sewer line when it was backing up into a patient’s shower. When our staff started cleaning it out, they pulled out socks, a hospital gown, and a few other things I won’t mention. It’s amazing some of the stuff we deal with!
What would you say to someone considering joining Medxcel?
I absolutely recommend Medxcel as a great place to work. I love everything from our Core Values to how we’re treated as associates. I can’t think of another company that offers the benefits package that Medxcel does; it’s spectacular! Medxcel is adamant about work life balance and our leaders are amazing people all the way up to the top. When the president and vice presidents of our company walk into a building and know everyone’s names, that speaks volumes.
How do you feel facilities management impacts patient care?
People tend to think that only clinicians impact the patients but that couldn’t be further from the truth. If you’re in the hospital, you don’t want to be there, you’re sick, you’re tired, you don’t feel good. And if your room is 110 degrees and nobody comes to fix it, you’re even more miserable. We take care of some of the little things that really affect our patients from temperature control to fixing a light or call button. We positively impact our patients in many ways that they might never see. If you arrive at a hospital and it’s run down, do you want to go in for healthcare? No. When you pull up to our buildings, they are gorgeous thanks to the hard work of our landscaping crews. We touch people in so many different ways and I think we make a big difference.
