The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently refreshed their Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings. These ratings are on a five-star scale through Hospital Compare, a website that informs patients on how well hospitals are providing care in compliance with CMS. This allows patients to be informed when they are making decisions related to their healthcare.
CMS assigns these ratings to more than 4,500 hospitals nationwide with the
HCAHPS (Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems) survey. The rating is based on a hospital’s performance on 57 measures across seven quality areas: Mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience, effectiveness of care, timeliness of care and efficient use of medical imaging. The ratings are also based on data from the hospitals as recent as October 2019. CMS has plans to update the methodology for its next round of ratings in 2021 based on feedback; the last update came in February 2019. Medxcel hospitals always strive for excellent CMS compliance, as it showcases the quality of our facilities’ patient care.
This year,
407 hospitals were recognized with five-star ratings from CMS. In turn, 228 received one star, 710 received two stars, 1,119 were assigned three stars, and 1,136 were recognized with four stars. The number of five-star rated hospitals has already risen since last year, due to CMS’ “Patients Over Paperwork” initiative. This initiative works to reduce the time healthcare professionals spend on paperwork so they can reinvest in what really matters - their patients.
Medxcel Vice President of Program Development & Facilities Compliance Larry Lacombe
recently shared insights on putting patients over paperwork and how healthcare facilities can take advantage of CMS’ reduced burdens to improve the physical environment.
