Tell us about the role of maintenance mechanic and your responsibilities.
I work at a hospital site in Florida, and we have two maintenance mechanics. That means we are really jacks of all trades. We take care of most everything facilities related in the hospital including electrical, mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, whatever needs to be taken care of. I see a lot of variety in my work and it’s challenging every day, not knowing what’s going to come up from one minute to the next but Medxcel is a great place to work and it’s never boring.
Describe the path you took to arrive in your current role.
Growing up my dad was a plumber, so I grew up learning that trade, working with him. Then I went to auto mechanic school and had a job doing that. Then I attended a local vocational school where I studied HVAC and got experience in that trade. I worked at a paper mill for ten years where I did a lot of mechanical work and equipment repair and then I worked at a power plant for 19 years and spent time in a warehouse setting too. So, I am familiar with so many types of equipment. My wife was working at this hospital and about six years ago she let me know that there was a maintenance position open with Medxcel and here I am.
Has Medxcel supported you with training opportunities?
Most of my training has been on the job and luckily, I have a lot of prior experience with different trades. I have taken advantage of online learning courses, and I know that there are some great opportunities I might want to take advantage of when it comes to certifications and things like that.
How would you describe the Medxcel culture?
Medxcel has a great culture and it’s a good company to work for. Management is involved and supportive, you can depend on them to be there for you. Medxcel offers competitive benefits and pay and a great environment.
What is the best part of your job?
The best part of my job is the satisfaction I get when I complete a job knowing I did good work. That makes our customers happy, and it makes me happy.
How does the work of your team impact patient care?
I think what we do makes the patients more comfortable. We try to respect the space and privacy of patients but at times we do need to enter an occupied patient room or treatment area if something is wrong, perhaps their TV is not working or something else in the room needs fixed or adjusted. Those things can make a big difference to that patient and everything else we do that patients might not see, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, when all those things are working that makes our patients feel better about being in the hospital, because we all understand that their situation is not good to begin with; nobody wants to be in the hospital. That’s part of what makes our jobs satisfying, knowing that what we do makes a difference.
What would you say to someone who asks you if you recommend working for Medxcel?
I recommend working for Medxcel, it’s a great company to work for and I think the culture and benefits are right on par with other big organizations. This company has been very good to me and the other employees here. Medxcel is a great place to work.
