VP, Operations

Carla S
Meet Carla! Carla is VP, Operations for Medxcel, overseeing facilities management services across multiple sites in her assigned region. Working closely with customers, Carla is responsible for integrated service delivery, customer retention, associate development, and strategic initiatives in her region. Carla works closely with Medxcel and customer leadership teams to ensure strategic alignment and achievement of goals for all parties.
“Medxcel gave me the opportunity to build the team of my dreams. I’ve been successful in each position I’ve transitioned into because of my teams. My team always shares everything with me, we are partners, and we cover for each other.”

Describe your responsibilities and the makeup of your team.

There are four VPs, Operations and we each have the responsibility of implementing field operation strategy for the organization in our region. I think of myself as the interface between customer leadership and Medxcel leadership, making sure that we connect our services, strategy, and vision to meet the needs of our customers. There are four area vice presidents and we each cover a region with multiple markets. My team consists of regional directors for each area or market so in my region I have two regional director positions, one each in Michigan and Wisconsin. Under each regional director we have facilities directors responsible for individual or groups of hospitals. These directors manage the facilities personnel at their customer sites.

Describe the path you took to arrive in your current role.

I attended Spellman College and during that time I had two consecutive summer internships at a hospital. After graduation I had the opportunity to work for healthcare organizations where I held roles in safety and emergency management. I got some additional experience in compliance and eventually found my way to Medxcel. I held the first regional emergency management officer position and after a few years I transitioned to regional safety director for Michigan then the regional director for facilities management with responsibility for facilities as well as planning, design and construction. Most recently I was promoted to VP, Operations for the region of Michigan and Wisconsin.

What types of training and development has Medxcel provided you that have assisted you in growing your career and achieving your goals?

One of the best things about Medxcel is that there are so many opportunities for development and training, and so many ways to grow an exciting career. Those opportunities have been invaluable along my career journey. I’ve taken advantage of leadership trainings, industry organization trainings, courses through Harvard Business, Managed Mentor, Medxcel University and other online courses. All of these have really helped develop me as a leader. Mentor programs help create valuable lasting relationships with Medxcel and customer leaders and allow me to learn from a wide variety of people about what works well and what doesn’t, what opportunities are available, and how I can apply those learnings. Even though we’re busy in our day-to-day work and personal lives, it’s important to take time to focus on growth and development and Medxcel supports and encourages that. I encourage all of my team members to take advantage of training and development programs and educational assistance is available to those who would like to further their education.  There was a turning point in my career where I jumped from safety, which had been my comfort zone for over a decade, to operations as a regional director. With the support of Medxcel I was able to make that change in my career and grow my knowledge base.

What is the best part of your job?

As a leader, the best part of my job is seeing my team grow and be successful. To me, success means making our customers happy, providing a beautiful safe space for their staff, patients, and visitors. Success means ensuring that the environment is one we can all be proud of for the communities we serve. Success also means having a team with succession plans in place, seeing our associates grow and be promoted into new positions, sometimes seeing someone transfer to another department or division to learn something new and help cross-pollinate our organization. To me success is all about our associates, that’s the most fruitful part of my job.

How does Medxcel and its associates impact patient care?

I love to explain to people that even though we’re not clinicians, Medxcel provides an equally important component of caring for patients. I think of it as the inside the hospital contains the clinical work, those directly caring for the patients. Then the shell over that is the healthcare environment and that’s everything Medxcel is responsible for. We ensure that everything inside the hospital environment is safe, that the grounds are beautiful, that the facilities are in working order, that the temperature and humidity levels are correct, that we’re in compliance with all regulatory standards, and that everyone is prepared in case of an emergency. We also provide best pricing through our sourcing and contracting teams so that we can utilize the newest and most innovative technologies available for our customers. The inside clinical piece of the hospital can’t function without all of the things Medxcel takes care of; we’re equal partners working together to serve customers in our communities.

How would you describe the Medxcel culture?

Medxcel is an entire company of subject matter experts, in other words people with very high skill sets. Words I use to describe the culture at Medxcel include engaged, innovative, standardized, and best in class. I am a Medxcel fan, lover, and promoter!

What would you say to someone who asks you if you recommend working for Medxcel?

Coming to Medxcel was the best decision I’ve ever made, and I recommend it as a place to work a trillion times over. At some organizations, if you are looking for a career in facilities or safety there may not be a lot of opportunity for growth, but at Medxcel, we are completely focused on serving healthcare in that capacity. That provides associates with so many layers of opportunity whether they’re interested in facilities, safety, compliance, or even our corporate support functions like marketing, supply chain or finance. There are so many areas you can learn about, and you can grow your career within the organization. Medxcel supports the work we do and provides training and education, strategic leadership, standardization, and the resources we need to really grow and excel. I’ve always been made to feel that my job is extremely important and that I am greatly appreciated. That has done wonders for my career and makes me extremely engaged and excited about my work each day. Working at Medxcel is truly amazing.
