Describe your day-to-day responsibility and a typical day.
The Medxcel Planning, Design and Construction (PDC) group manages capital projects for our clients including renovations and new build projects. I am currently responsible for two markets, the Northeast, and eastern Florida. In both regions I have a team of project coordinators and project managers and together we manage projects from inception to completion, through the processes of design, approval, construction, and activation. Right now we’re overseeing a new hospital build in Florida. It’s a rare opportunity as there are not a lot of new hospitals built in the United States. The bulk of our work is managing renovations.
Describe the path you took to arrive in your current role.
I have a degree in construction management, and I began my career working for a sub-contractor then a general contractor. I’ve been in an owner’s rep position for about fifteen years. I worked for a defense contractor in the northeast, and we built secure laboratories. That was my entry into healthcare, and I became an owner’s rep in healthcare. I most recently worked for a large hospital system as a project manager and after a 2-year hiatus to spend time with my family, I joined Medxcel as a regional construction manager.
How do Medxcel’s training and development opportunities provide value to associates?
I have several project managers currently working towards their Certified Healthcare Construction Certification through the American Hospital Association and ASHE. Medxcel is supporting them through that journey and supports me with continuing ed courses to maintain my certification. I also have a project manager who is using Medxcel’s tuition reimbursement benefit to assist him in achieving his master’s degree. That makes me so happy. These types of benefits are really valued by associates and are very important in attracting and retaining top talent.
What is the best part of your job?
The best part of my job is working in healthcare. It’s so rewarding to know that we’re an integral part of providing a safe and warm environment of care for patients. When we renovate or create a new space, it is our goal to provide spaces that are clean, welcoming, comfortable, and that help patients heal by making them feel they’re receiving the best quality care. I’ve worked in a lot of industries, and I’ve enjoyed them all, but I don’t think there’s anything as rewarding as knowing you’re impacting your community in terms of healthcare. These patients are our friends and family members.
Which of Medxcel’s Core Values speaks the most to you?
Service of the Poor speaks to me because I feel that service is what we’re all about. Here in Florida there is a real sense of community and serving our community is everything to me. We serve our customers in a way that allows them to focus on patient care, because they know that Medxcel is taking care of everything in the background. We provide service to our customers, so they can provide service to the patients and the community.
What would you say to someone considering joining Medxcel?
I highly recommend Medxcel as a place to work. We’re experiencing a lot of growth and our customers are great partners. I love the fact that we focus on serving and caring for one another. As a company we take time to reflect and focus on the more important things in life. It guides our spirit in the way we all work together to accomplish our individual, corporate and customer goals.
