Tell us about your role and the teams you oversee.
I’m responsible for four teams: operational purchasing, capital requisitioning, expense management, and vendor management.
The operational purchasing team processes purchase requisitions into purchase orders, monitors open orders, and handles key vendor accounts. When technicians in hospitals need parts or vendor services, we facilitate those requests—often urgently—to get purchase orders moving quickly while ensuring all documentation is accurate and quotes are current.
The expense management team oversees procurement of goods, services, and travel through our corporate card program. They manage Concur accounts and conduct comprehensive expense report audits to ensure compliance.
The capital requisitioning team works with our Planning, Design, Construction, and Energy team to ensure data accuracy in our software systems, helping expedite purchase order requests and handling payment inquiries.
Finally, the vendor management team optimizes vendor-related data, ensuring master data accuracy—vendor names, contact information, addresses—so when our operational purchasing team dispatches purchase orders, they’re reaching the right people at our vendor organizations operating across multiple states.
How did you get started in your career in procurement?
I began my career in accounting, and after several years I was presented with an opportunity to work in supply chain. I’m so grateful I took that chance. I absolutely love what I do and the people I support. I joke with my team that it’s great to come in with a plan, but that doesn’t mean things will go according to that plan. I love helping others, and this position allows me to help other teams, build efficiencies, and plan for the future.
What path did you take to arrive in your current role?
It’s been an amazing journey. I wasn’t looking to leave my job when I got a call about an opportunity at Medxcel. I was so impressed with the company and the people I interviewed with that I called the recruiter from my car after the interview, before I even left the parking lot. I told him if this opportunity wasn’t a good fit, I wanted him to find me a job somewhere at Medxcel, because the company felt like home.
Medxcel core values, employee enthusiasm, and culture spoke to my soul. My leaders care about me and help mentor me toward the next steps in my career. At previous companies, supervisors weren’t hands-on and didn’t express interest in learning about my goals. Knowing I’d have a strong, caring support system was huge when I joined Medxcel. There are so many opportunities to grow here.
What is the best part of your job?
I love working with cross-functional teams to build efficient processes and ensure we’re doing what’s best for Medxcel. The friendships I’ve developed here are amazing. I love learning about other areas of the business and have developed a valuable understanding of the interdependencies between our teams.
How do your teams collaborate with other areas of the business?
I always remind people that we wouldn’t be where we are today without our partnerships. We can’t continue to build or enhance processes without those relationships. We need to understand what end users are experiencing and what roadblocks they face so we can realign processes, provide training, or make improvements—whether that’s enhancing existing processes or starting fresh.
How does Medxcel support your personal wellbeing?
Having a generous PTO program has definitely helped me enjoy more time with my family, especially my children. Being able to take trips and decompress is invaluable.
One thing I truly love about Medxcel is that it’s not just about work—it’s about getting to know people and understanding them. Maybe I see someone who’s normally bubbly and outgoing, but they’re quiet. Taking an extra five minutes to understand what they’re going through and offering support makes all the difference. It’s asking someone, “Hey, I know your son went to prom this weekend. How’d it go?”
It allows us to be a true family, bring our whole selves to work without needing to hide what’s going on in our lives.
How does the work of your teams impact patient care?
My teams are committed and compassionate. They understand that if we don’t get a vendor set up, we’re preventing hospitals from placing orders. If we don’t get a purchase order processed, we can’t get critical services performed or parts delivered to support patient care. Whether it’s the middle of the night or a weekend, hospitals always feel supported because we have processes in place to help them, no matter what.
We’ve even helped employees traveling on business with hotel reservations or corporate card issues during non-business hours. We’re ready to help our stakeholders at all times.
How would you describe the culture at Medxcel?
The culture at Medxcel is very friendly and family oriented. We work with so many people every day, and everyone feels supported. There’s mutual respect and a desire to gain different perspectives to be a better organization.
This is an organization with leaders who care. If you have a question, you can walk into a vice president’s office and they’ll ask, “How can I support you?” Our leaders want to hear your voice and understand your challenges. At Medxcel, we all work as partners. You’re free to voice your opinion and share ideas, and then you start working on them.
How does Medxcel support career development?
I’m a huge proponent of supporting career development for my team members through cross-functional training. Just because you’re in purchasing doesn’t mean you can’t learn about vendor management. I’ve promoted someone from capital requisitioning to expense management and moved someone from purchasing to vendor management specialist.
The opportunities are there. It’s about helping them see how they impact other areas and asking, “Would you want to learn more about this?” When team members ask, “What else can I learn?”—I tell them, “Tell me what you want to do, what you’re interested in, and let’s work toward that.” It’s amazing to see their growth.
How does Medxcel impact the communities we serve?
Medxcel supports us volunteering in our community. A few years ago, I was on a team that volunteered at a facility for victims of domestic violence and their children. We helped clean this massive facility and fix things that needed to be repaired.
Another volunteer opportunity that was close to my heart was at a local adult care center for people suffering with Alzheimer’s and dementia. It was one of the best days, helping with cleaning and maintenance, but also getting to interact with the members. It’s amazing that we have these opportunities to serve others.
What would you say to someone who asks you if you recommend working for Medxcel?
I absolutely recommend working at Medxcel. The culture, the growth opportunities, the supportive leadership all come together to create an environment where you can truly thrive. I’ve never regretted that phone call from the parking lot six years ago.
