Payroll Analyst I

Billie K
Billie is a Payroll Analyst I working out of the Medxcel Corporate Office in Indianapolis. In her role Billie is responsible for compiling, entering, posting, and reconciling payroll data. She and her team maintain accurate payroll records and assist Medxcel employees with questions pertaining to company policies and procedures. Billie investigates and resolves payroll issues concerning payments, deductions, and taxes. The payroll team works closely with Medxcel’s finance team to ensure accuracy and they assist in identifying, evaluating, and implement process improvements.

“I’m surprised how much I’ve grown here. I’ve learned to trust my instincts more and grow my capabilities because everyone here from the top down encourages us to suggest ways to improve processes and make changes. They have so much confidence in me that my confidence has skyrocketed since I started work here. I’ve had jobs where I just felt beat down all the time but the culture at Medxcel is awesome.”

Describe your responsibilities.

Our team is responsible for processing the Medxcel payroll which means we make sure that everyone gets paid accurately and on time. We also assist our finance department with a lot of data reporting, and we handle payroll discrepancies and issues and answer questions from employees. We are responsible for our employees’ money and that’s a sensitive subject for everyone.  We need to make sure that everyone gets what they’ve earned, and I think we do a great job with that. We have a system where employees can enter a ticket if they have a payroll issue or question, or they can call us directly. Our team is amazing, and we work together seamlessly to take care of any issues as they arise. We don’t really delegate; we operate with all hands on deck. We rotate quarterly for some specialized responsibilities but for the most part we work together like a well-oiled machine.

Describe the path you took to arrive in your current role.

I worked in retail for years and I really fell in love with the numbers and the business side of the work. The hours are brutal in retail so one year after the holiday season I felt it was time to move on to something new, with better hours and a focus on business. That’s when I took my first payroll position. I held a payroll position in South Bend for about five years then I decided to move to Indianapolis to be closer to my family, that’s when I joined Medxcel as a Payroll Specialist and I’m so glad I did. After a few years I was promoted to my current position.

Has Medxcel provided you with training and development related to your role?

Medxcel is great about supporting us with training and development opportunities. One of the best experiences I had was attending a payroll system conference in Vegas that provided us with hands-on training on our system which is so robust. I learned a lot there about reporting and BI, that was one of my favorite training sessions. The software also has a course catalog within it that we can use to learn at our own pace. When we have a topic we’d like to learn more about, we can go into the system and do coursework around that topic.

What is the best part of your job?

The best parts of my job are working with my team and helping people. I really love helping others. Money is a sensitive subject and I feel a real sense of accomplishment when I help someone resolve an issue. Maybe their bank deposit didn’t go through, or they’re having some other sort of issue. With payroll things are pretty black and white, it’s either right or its wrong and I love to get things resolved. My team is great; I can’t say enough about how much I enjoy working with them and they way we work together.

Which of Medxcel’s Core Values do you feel is most important to you and your role?

In payroll, Integrity is everything. We deal with so much sensitive and confidential information, everything from pay rates to other issues employees may be having. I’m really proud of the way our department demonstrates Integrity in all that we do.

What would you say to someone who asks you if you recommend working for Medxcel?

I absolutely recommend people join Medxcel. Coming here is the best thing I’ve done in my career. When I’m meeting with new employees during orientation, I love to tell them how Medxcel is a young company and they really listen to their employees. I’ve worked at companies that were resistant to change, stuck in the mantra of ‘that’s the way we’ve always done it’, but that is the opposite of what I’ve experienced here. At Medxcel, if a process isn’t working, we’re encouraged to flow it out and brainstorm improvements and solutions. I have a Six Sigma Green Belt and it’s been amazing to be able to utilize that skill set here. Medxcel is so open and willing to say that if there’s a better way to do something, and we can demonstrate how and why, then they let us run with it.

Is there anything you have learned during your time in this role that has surprised you?

I’m surprised how much I’ve grown here. I’ve learned to trust my instincts more and grow my capabilities because everyone here from the top down encourages us to suggest ways to improve processes and make changes. They have so much confidence in me that my confidence has skyrocketed since I started working here. It’s really amazing. I’ve had jobs where I just felt beat down all the time but the culture at Medxcel is awesome.
