“Being supported in my quest to acquire new knowledge and skills is one favorite part of my job. It makes you feel seen and valued to know there’s a career path for you and everyone wants you to succeed. It doesn’t feel like you have to elbow your way in or fight for what you need; it just feels like support.”

What is your role at Medxcel?

In my role as Project Manager, Solutions Delivery, I support the delivery, implementation and enhancement of various technology systems — both internal and external (client-facing). Currently, my team is managing a new software implementation for the Real Estate department.

In this role, it often feels like there’s a million balls in the air and my job is to pull them out of the air and organize them, keeping everyone on task. It requires owning the project and pushing it over the finish line to its successful completion.

Describe the path you took to arrive in your current role.

After working in retail for many years, I joined Medxcel as Payroll Specialist about five years ago. In that role, I fell in love with the numbers and business side of things. When I applied for the Project Manager, Solutions Delivery position as an internal candidate, my previous supervisor supported my choice. As a single mother who’s been in the workforce forever, I think I am just a natural project manager.

The relationships I’ve built in the last few years have facilitated the transition into my current role. My team has been gracious and supportive, and I genuinely feel welcome. This role is an opportunity to take the knowledge I’ve gained in recent years and take one step deeper into the inner workings of the company, helping to advance Medxcel’s vision.

Has Medxcel provided you with training and development related to your role?

Medxcel is great about supporting us with training and development opportunities. One of the best experiences I’ve had here was attending an industry conference in Las Vegas that provided us with hands-on training on our payroll system, which is so robust. I learned a lot there. At Medxcel we’re always encouraged to seek out training on topics or skills that interest us.

Looking ahead, I’m working towards my Scrum Master certification. It was suggested to me two weeks into my new role. I feel like my leaders want me to succeed, and that’s huge to me.

What is the best part of your job?

The best parts of my job are working with my team and helping people. I really love helping others. Being supported in my quest to acquire new knowledge and skills is another favorite part of my job. It makes you feel seen and valued to know there’s a career path for you and everyone wants you to succeed. It doesn’t feel like you have to elbow your way in or fight for what you need; it just feels like support.

How would you describe the culture at Medxcel?

I’ve never experienced anything like this. With previous employers, the culture felt stagnant, stuck on “we’ve done it this way for 50 years.” At Medxcel you get a say in the processes, focus, and future of the company. If you see something isn’t working and you come up with a solid way to fix it, our leaders are receptive to it.

What would you say to someone who asks you if you recommend working for Medxcel?

I’m so passionate about my career and experience at Medxcel, people often ask me where I work before I even disclose it. Like, “where do you work again? Are you guys hiring?” I’m constantly texting current job listings to people. Medxcel has been nothing but nurturing of my career path and goals.

When I meet new employees during orientation, I love to tell them how Medxcel is a young company and they really listen to their employees. Medxcel is so open and willing to learn of new ideas. If we can demonstrate a better way of doing something, they let us run with it.

Is there anything you have learned during your time in this role that has surprised you?

I’m surprised how much I’ve grown here. I’ve learned to trust my instincts more and grow my capabilities because everyone here from the top down encourages us to suggest ways to improve processes and make changes. They have so much confidence in me that my confidence has skyrocketed since I started working here. It’s really amazing. I’ve had jobs where I just felt beat down all the time but the culture at Medxcel is awesome.

Safety is huge for patients. You never want anyone to go home sicker than they came into our facilities. We can’t do anything about what brought them to the hospital, but we don’t want their condition to worsen because of our buildings, or because the air pressure is wrong, or because there was a fire, for example. They shouldn’t have to worry about water systems, temperature, humidity, none of those things should be on their minds.
